Embarking on a real estate venture in 2019, I stumbled upon a promising fixer-upper - a 3-bed, 2-bath property with 2,000 sq ft of open space. Intrigued by the concept of group homes, I envisioned affordable, all-inclusive housing. However, with no concrete plan, I faced challenges in connecting with potential occupants.
After months of unsuccessful attempts with nursing homes, nurse agencies, and construction companies, a breakthrough came when a friend suggested reaching out to the Veterans Administration (VA). As a Veteran myself, I quickly located a contact responsible for Veteran Housing. Unfortunately, I hit a roadblock as I wasn't set up as a Non-Profit.
Undeterred, the VA contact directed me to Goodwill, recently granted funds for "rapid re-housing" of veterans affected by the growing pandemic. In May 2020, I met with Goodwill, and by June, I welcomed my first three tenants. It was through this journey that I discovered the pressing need for Sober Living Environments among veterans facing homelessness and addiction struggles.
Recognizing my limitations, I enlisted the help of a House Manager with 25 years of successful recovery experience. Thus, The Lighthouse was born, dedicated to providing affordable sober living for veterans aspiring to be their best selves. Our micro-communities foster accountability, structure, and a sense of belonging, reducing isolation and increasing positive recovery outcomes.
The impact of The Lighthouse surpassed my expectations, prompting a commitment to creating more such havens for veterans and civilians in need. Join us in making a difference in the lives of those who have served our country and the citizens of the OKC community.
